Learn to Identify Fish with the PADI Fish ID Specialty Course

One of the most common questions you hear on a dive boat when conducting diving courses is what is the name of that fish. Be the diver that is answering that question, rather than asking it by signing up for the PADI AWARE Fish Identification specialty course.

    To enroll on an AWARE Fish Identification Specialty course you must:

  • Be an Open Water diver
  • Have recent diving experience – we recommend completing a scuba review if you have not dived for 12 months
  • 10 years of age or older
  • Medically fit to dive 1 Day Fish Identification Specialty Course on Koh Tao

    The course consists of two sections:
  • Knowledge Development – Instructor-led knowledge development session and completion of the knowledge review
  • Open Water training – 2 x training dives

    At Koh Tao Diving School we take our customer promise very seriously. All courses are conducted with a maximum of 4 students per PADI Instructor. Our Dive instructors are highly trained and will ensure you receive lots of attention and most importantly, progress at your own pace in a relaxed environment. During your training, we will slowly build your confidence and ability as you develop the skills necessary to become proficient at fish identification.

    Course Schedule

    Day 1:
    09.00 – 11.30: Orientation & Knowledge Development
    12.30 – 17.00: AWARE Fish Identification training dives 1 & 2

    You are now a certified PADI AWARE Fish Identification diver AWARE Fish Identification Specialty Course Information Orientation & Knowledge Development We start the AWARE Fish Identification specialty course at 09.00 with an Orientation that includes the completion of paperwork and the PADI Medical statement.
    The AWARE Fish Identification specialty course consists of 2 training dives that we complete in the ocean around Koh Tao. There is an Instructor-led knowledge development and a 10-question open book knowledge review to complete that your specialty instructor will review.

    The Instructor-led knowledge development is conducted during the morning of day 1. Some of the subjects you will cover include:

  • How many different species of fish exist worldwide
  • Common family groupings used to identify fish on Koh Tao including the 12 commonly used groups
  • Key characteristics that assist in distinguishing between different fish families
  • How many different species of fish exist worldwide
  • What is the roving diver survey technique for identifying fish
  • Planning fish surveys and techniques used.
    Koh Tao Marine Life & Fish Identification Course

    There are 2 AWARE Fish Identification training dives to complete to become an AWARE Fish Identification specialist:
    AWARE Fish Identification training dive #1
    This will be a nice relaxing dive around the coral reef You will have your fish slates along with a blank slate so you can take notes.
    Your Instructor will bring an underwater camera along to record the fish we see. We can look back at real images and discuss them after the dive.
    You will be identifying the fish you see and placing them in appropriate family groups and identifying specific species. Your Instructor will also be asking you to record what you see, including numbers and any additional information about the habitat.

    The second dive is about planning and conducting a fish survey that will include recording fish families, species, abundance, and habitat information. After the dive, you will discuss your findings with your Instructor.

    The ocean around Koh Tao boasts colorful corals, an abundance of marine life, and lots of diversity, more than enough to keep even the most experienced scuba diver occupied for months on end. Koh Tao provides all this and more at a variety of dive sites ranging from shallow coral reefs, located within the island’s beautiful bays, to deeper outlying granite pinnacles, just a 30-40 minutes boat journey offshore.
    Our dive team is experienced and highly knowledgeable dive professionals, familiar with the local reef ecology and dive sites. Fun Diving for all Scuba Divers Koh Tao We will provide you with a bespoke, relaxed, and enjoyable fun diving experience.
    We will show the best of everything that there is to see, at dive sites suitable for your level of training and experience, tailoring the dive to your interests. The scuba diving around the island offers something for every diver and with over 25 fantastic dive sites, there is enough variety to keep you hooked on Koh Tao diving for weeks and weeks.
    If you are a deep dive enthusiast you will be pleased to hear there are several great deep sites, including Sail Tock arguably the Gulf of Thailand’s premier scuba diving dive site. Explore the Underwater World Located between Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, this 40-metre, deep dive site is in the middle of the sea. Famous for its iconic Chimney, you will be engulfed by huge schools of snapper, fusiliers, and chevron barracuda and see lots of the larger pelagic fish here too.
    Sail Rock is usually organized as a full-day trip from Koh Tao. Closer to home we have Chumphon Pinnacles and South West Pinnacle, both a 30-40 minutes boat ride from Koh Tao. These dive sites offer the best opportunity to dive with Whale sharks and also boast large schools of scad and Trevally with Brydes Whales also seen at Southwest when passing through.
    Closer to home Koh Tao’s picturesque bays offer stunning scenery above the surface with the backdrop of a thick green jungle and granite rocks, rock faces, and shorelines. These shallow dive sites boast colorful thriving reefs that are brimming with marine life and easy diving conditions, perfect for long relaxing dives. For the more adventurous diver, the HTMS Sattakut is a first-class deep wreck dive, perfect for advanced divers.
    Lying between 18-30 metres this wreck is 10 years old now and full of life. Neighboring island Koh Nang Yuan offers the iconic twin peaks as the central point of the stunning above-the-water scenery for you to enjoy during your surface interval. Fun Diving around Koh Nang Yuan It also offers several fantastic dive sites, with Japanese Gardens boasting one of the most diverse coral reefs in Thailand.
    Diversity is something Koh Nang Yuan has a lot of. Some of Koh Tao’s rare marine animals are also seen around the island including the only dive site where we see the Pink Tailed Triggerfish and two of the only locations where we see Ocellated Eagle ray.
    Koh Nang Yuan shoreline has some cool caves and swim-throughs that are great fun for divers with the necessary buoyancy skills required to navigate them and over on the north side, Green Rock offers a deep site and lots of swim-throughs. East Side of Koh Tao Traveling over to the East Side of Koh Tao and Tanote Bay offers excellent macro-opportunities and is especially popular with underwater photographers. If you have a sharp eye look for the Frog Fish here, there is also a sunken catamaran thriving with life and artificial concrete cubes that complement the natural reef well and attract more marine life.
