IDC Staff Instructor Candidate Preparation Course
The IDC Staff Candidate Preparation course is scheduled in the day or two leading up to the IDC and to begin with you will sit the IDC Staff Instructor theory and GS&P exams.
You must score 80% in each exam to pass and we will review and remediate on any questions you do not understand.
Remediation is an important prerequisite to become a successful PADI IDC Staff Instructor and your exams are great preparation for when you audit the IDC.

General Standards & Dive Theory
PADI IDC candidates will have lots of dive theory or standards questions throughout the IDC, which you will be able to help them with.
During the IDC Staff Preparation course, you will participate in a series of Course Director led classroom presentations and complete the evaluation training.
We will also conduct the IDC Staff Instructor skill circuit to ensure your dive skills are exemplary for the IDC.

Audit an entire IDC – IDC Staff Instructor course
As you can see from the schedule above, the Instructor Development Course is scheduled over 14 days.
You must audit Days 1-12 as per the performance requirements to become a PADI IDC Staff Instructor.
You can refresh your understanding and knowledge of the full PADI Instructor Development Course here.

Meeting Performance Requirements
You must also attend the final counselling sessions on day 12, however, you do not need to attend the EFR Instructor course day.
If you have met all the evaluation performance requirements you do not need to attend the Mock IE.
However, if you have the time, we highly recommended you do as it is a very good learning experience and gives you more evaluation practice.

Water Skill Development Workshops – IDC Staff Instructor course
Dive Skills Circuit (24 skill circuit)
This is the same skill circuit you taught when you conducted an Open Water diver course confined water session.
You will be familiar with the scoring from conducting the PADI Dive master Course  skill circuit too.
This may be something you have been teaching a lot recently or last did several years ago and would like to refresh and sharpen your demonstration quality skills.
Dive Skill Practice Sessions
We tailor additional skill practice session to the individual needs of each IDC Staff instructor candidate, to ensure you can easily demonstrate the basic 24 skills and score the required 96 points.
We always work with our IDC Staff Instructor candidates, so they can become a confident, knowledgeable and skilful dive educator and an underwater role model.
Your practical skill level is an extremely important part of this and why we encourage you to embrace our philosophy when it comes to our training methodology and neutrally buoyant skill development.

Neutrally Buoyant Skill Development
We understand this is something you may not have seen previously in your training nor practiced in your teaching activities.
We conduct all staged skills in the diving position where possible and we include neutral buoyancy skill circuits in all our Professional level training programs.
If you did not complete any Pro level training programs with us, we hope you will find this improves your skill level and it certainly adds realism into your diver training courses.

IDC In water Workshops
As you may remember from your own IDC there are a number of in water workshops we conduct during the course. As an IDC Staff Instructor candidate, you will be working with the candidates during these workshops.
If you would like to practice these workshops prior to the start of the IDC, please let us know ahead of time so we can schedule accordingly.

Evaluating Knowledge Development presentations
Prior to the candidates first Knowledge Development presentation you will complete your evaluation training, which is part of the IDC Staff Instructor course Preparation course.
You will also audit the Knowledge Development Workshop and assist the IDC candidates with preparing their first Knowledge Development presentation.
During the IDC candidate Knowledge Development presentations, you will sit next to the Course Director as you evaluate the Knowledge Development presentation of each candidate.
You will apply the techniques learned during the Evaluation training to track what was said or what occurred during the presentation.
Once the presentation is finished you and your Course Director will discuss the candidates score and review each point and you will be asked to explain why you scored the presentation the way you did.

Knowledge Development Presentations
We will discuss counseling points and techniques to use when critiquing each presentation.
As you evaluate more Knowledge Development presentations you will gain more confidence and your scoring will become closer to the control score of your Course Director.
When you are ready, feeling confident and your scores are matching our control score, you will be given the opportunity to critique candidate performance, give positive feedback and suggestions for improvement.
You will have the opportunity to evaluate several candidate Knowledge Development presentations during the IDC.

Evaluating Confined Water teaching presentations
You will audit the confined water teaching workshop and assist the IDC candidates to prepare their first confined water teaching presentation.
During the confined water teaching presentations, you will be in the water, evaluating each candidate presentation using the Confined & Open Water evaluation slate.
Applying techniques learned during the evaluation training session, you will record what was said and what occurred during the presentation.

Confined Water Teaching Presentations
Once the candidate has finished their debriefing, you will discuss how you scored the presentation with your Course Director, which involves reviewing each section of the presentation.
Practice makes perfect. The more confined water teaching presentations you evaluate the more consistent your evaluation performance and scores will be and the closer they will be to the control score.
Once you are confident in your evaluation skills you will have the opportunity to debrief candidate performance, giving positive reinforcement and suggestions for improvement.
You will have the opportunity to evaluate several candidates confined water presentations.

Evaluating Open Water teaching presentation
The final section of evaluation training for an IDC Staff Instructor is the Open Water presentations.
You will complete Open Water evaluation training as part of the IDC Staff Instructor Prep course and audit the Open Water teaching workshop during the IDC.
As an IDC Staff Instructor candidate, you will help the candidates prepare their first Open Water presentations and answer questions they may have when preparing future presentations.

Open Water Teaching Presentation
Guiding IDC candidates through the various teaching presentations of the IDC is an important role an IDC Staff Instructor plays. You will be in the water during the Open Water teaching presentations as you evaluate each presentation using the Confined & Open water evaluation slates.
Applying the techniques you learned during the evaluation training, you will evaluate all aspects of each candidates integrated Open Water presentations.

Evaluating IDC Candidate Presentations
Returning to the boat you will review your scoring and compare with the control score before scoring the candidates debriefings.
Finally, you will have the opportunity to critique candidate performance.
Just as an IDC Open Water teaching presentation is the most challenging part of an IDC for a candidate, the Open Water evaluation is often the most challenging of the three areas of evaluation for the IDC Staff Instructor.

Open Water presents organization and management challenges for IDC Staff, in the same way Open Water training provides challenges at all levels of PADI Instructors of the PADI system.

Open Water IDC Candidate Evaluations
Environmental factors dictate using different control factors, which along with good judgement are factored into the evaluation criteria.
As with knowledge development and confined water presentations, you will have the opportunity to evaluate several candidate Open Water presentations during your IDC Staff Instructor course.
Throughout the IDC we will critique your performance and give you important feedback as your evaluation skills develop.
Our goal is for you to be scoring just like we do by the end of your PADI IDC Staff Instructor course.

Become a Role Model PADI IDC Staff Instructor
As an MSDT Specialty Instructor, if you want to continue your training and make a great career move, our PADI IDC Staff Instructor course offers you an excellent opportunity to take the next step.
PADI IDC Staff Instructors are in demand at Dive centre around the world having demonstrated their commitment to ongoing education and through their skills as a dive educator.
